Cucumber, Mint and Lemon Water

Why it works

A reason to keep drinking through the day. Mild dehydration reads as hunger and can worsen bloating, and this is a nicer prompt to refill your glass than plain water - with no juice and no sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced
  • 1 handful mint sprigs, lightly bruised
  • 1.5 L cold water

Method

  1. Lightly press the mint sprigs with the back of a knife to release their oils.
  2. Put the cucumber, lemon and mint in a large jug and pour over the cold water.
  3. Chill for at least an hour before drinking. You can top the jug up with fresh water once more before the fruit starts to taste tired.

Swaps

Add a few slices of ginger, or a handful of frozen berries.

FAQ

Does lemon water help with bloating?

Lemon water mostly helps because it gets you drinking more water, and good hydration supports regular digestion. The lemon itself doesn't flush out bloating, but it's a much better swap than soda.

Do sparkling water and soda cause bloating?

Yes. The carbon dioxide in fizzy drinks ends up in your stomach and can cause bloating and burping. Soda also adds sugar or sweeteners; plain water, tea and fruit-infused water are lighter swaps.
