Ginger and Lemon Morning Infusion

Why it works

Ginger supports digestion and is anti-inflammatory, and a warm, sugar-free infusion is a gentle way to start the day before breakfast - much easier on an empty stomach than coffee.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 thin slices fresh ginger
  • 1 mug hot water
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • 1 pinch (optional) ground turmeric

Method

  1. Put the ginger slices in a mug and pour over the hot (not quite boiling) water.
  2. Cover with a saucer and leave to steep for 5 minutes - covering keeps the aromatic oils in.
  3. Stir in the lemon juice, and the turmeric if using.
  4. Sip warm. You can top the mug up with more hot water once and get a second, milder infusion from the same ginger.

Swaps

Add a few fresh mint leaves to steep with the ginger.

FAQ

Does ginger help with digestion?

Ginger has long been used to ease nausea and digestive discomfort, and studies support its use for nausea. Fresh ginger in tea, stir-fries and marinades is also an easy way to add flavor without extra salt.

Does lemon water help with bloating?

Lemon water mostly helps because it gets you drinking more water, and good hydration supports regular digestion. The lemon itself doesn't flush out bloating, but it's a much better swap than soda.
