Golden Milk

Why it works
Turmeric with black pepper and a little fat is the classic anti-inflammatory combination - the pepper makes the turmeric far more absorbable. It is warm, calming and completely sugar-free, which makes it a good evening drink.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened milk of choice
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 pinch black pepper
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 small piece fresh ginger, grated (optional)
- 1/4 tsp coconut oil or ghee
Method
- Put the milk, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon and ginger if using into a small pan.
- Warm over low heat, whisking constantly, for 4-5 minutes. Keep it just below a simmer - boiling can make some milks split and dulls the flavour.
- Whisk in the coconut oil or ghee at the end until it melts in and the drink looks a little frothy.
- Strain into a mug if you used fresh ginger, and drink warm.
Swaps
A tiny bit of mashed date blended in if you want it sweeter. A pinch of cardamom is a good addition.

Turmeric is a root used for centuries in Indian cooking and contains curcumin, a compound studied for its antioxidant activity. In the kitchen it adds color and warmth to eggs, soups and rice; pairing it with black pepper and a little fat improves curcumin absorption.
Does ginger help with digestion?
Ginger has long been used to ease nausea and digestive discomfort, and studies support its use for nausea. Fresh ginger in tea, stir-fries and marinades is also an easy way to add flavor without extra salt.
