Why am I bloated after eating?
Bloating after meals usually comes from gas produced during digestion, air swallowed while eating fast, carbonated drinks, or water retention from salty food. Foods high in fermentable carbs (beans, onions, some dairy, sugar alcohols) are common triggers for many people.
- Eating slowly, chewing well and not lying down right after a meal helps most people.
- Increase fiber gradually and drink water through the day so digestion stays regular.
- See a doctor if bloating comes with severe pain, unexplained weight loss, blood in the stool or lasts for weeks: it may be an intolerance or another condition that needs a proper diagnosis.
